Interest in Nissan's seven-seat SUV stays solid as potential buyers move from researching their next model to being ready to buy. Best thought of as the larger sibling to the big-selling Nissan Qashqai the X-Trail has a refined and strong petrol engine, and most versions come well equipped. Be wary, though, because resale values are relatively poor and the diesel version is noisy. We think the Peugeot 5008 is a far better all-rounder.

The larger of Honda's two SUVs is easy to drive and comes with either an efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine or as a hybrid, in which a 2.0-litre petrol engine is paired with an electric motor. What's more, there's a comfortable driving position and decent boot space. It suffers from a poor infotainment system, though, and its engines can sound rough under load; both are areas in which the 5008 does a better job.
