10. Skoda Fabia
Sensible, comfortable, no-frills transport is what the Skoda Fabia offers. Thanks to its slightly boxy profile, it has loads of room for both front and rear-seat passengers, and a vast boot. You get a choice of petrol and diesel engines, too. We recommend the petrols, because the diesels are quite gruff. Whichever model you choose, it will have a dour interior and unexciting handling, but the Fabia’s still an easy car to drive and to live with.

9. Jaguar XF
The Jaguar XF is a car that gets better with age. As depreciation drops its price below those of its competitors, the XF is turning from a very good new luxury saloon into one of the best used car buys out there. True, it isn’t as efficient as its contemporaries, and the rear seats aren’t the most spacious (or comfortable) places to be. But the XF makes up for that by being a real delight to drive.

Comfort is the mainstay of the previous-generation Mercedes C-Class; while it isn’t as much fun to drive as a BMW 3 Series, it’s softer and more cosseting – a trait that boosted its popularity here in the UK. The only fly in the ointment is the 2.1-litre diesel engine, fitted to cars badged C220 CDI – it’s irritatingly noisy at low speeds. Otherwise, though, this C-Class is a top buy.
