6. Hyundai Ioniq

New Hyundai Ioniq vs Toyota Prius

Unlike its main rival, the Prius, Hyundai's Ioniq is available as a hybrid, a fully electric car and a plug-in hybrid.

Whichever version you choose, light steering makes it easy to drive in town, but the Ioniq is also entertaining on B-roads. Interior quality is good, and practicality decent, while running costs are very low.

Pick of the range: Hybrid Premium

5. Vauxhall Astra

Skoda Octavia vs Vauxhall Astra

The latest Vauxhall Astra is cheaper than the equivalent Volkswagen Golf and a better all-rounder than the Ford Focus, so it’s one of the best family hatchbacks around.

The Astra is also good to drive, practical and well equipped, although some rivals are quieter and more comfortable.
