Detroit 2012: Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid

The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept car makes its debut at the Detroit motor show 2012.
The hybrid version of Volvos XC60 SUV uses the same electric powertrain as the V60 Plug-In Hybrid, but the concept car at Detroit will have a petrol engine rather than the diesel found in the smaller estate.
Volvo says the hybrid XC60 is capable of travelling up to 28 miles on electric power alone, and can go as far as 600 miles using the motor and the engine together. It has CO2 emissions of 53g/km, and a claimed average economy of more than 100mpg.
The four-cylinder petrol engine and 12 kWh lithium-ion battery combine to create a 341bhp power output, with 69bhp coming from electric power. This propels the XC60 Hybrid Concept from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds.
As with the V60 plug-in, the XC60 concept car can be charged through a domestic socket, with a full charge taking just 3.5 hours. The cabin can also be heated or cooled while the battery is being charged to ensure it is at the desired temperature before setting off saving more battery power for driving duties.
The driver can choose to use the petrol engine alone, saving the battery for areas where it is more appropriate, such as city driving. When Save mode is activated, a generator can be used to charge the battery.
The hybrid system also allows the XC60 to offer four-wheel drive, with the battery powering the rear wheels and the engine driving the front.
Volvo has said a production version of the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is likely, but there are no confirmed dates or prices yet. The car is aimed primarily at the American and Chinese markets.
