New car sales in the UK fell by 3.5% in June from the same month last year.

Across the first six months of the year, the fall is more pronounced at 6.3% compared with the same period in 2017 – something that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says is down to the new car market stabilising following a turbulent 2017, which saw new tax rules come into force, prompting car buyers to make a purchase early so as not to be hit by new charges.

SUVs continue to be the largest growing market, with sales jumping by more than 16% year on year in June. Small cars and city cars remain popular, too, and accounted for more than 57% of all new cars sold last month.

Diesel cars are still hit by falling demand, with sales in June down by more than 28% on June 2017's figure and the year-to-date decline at 30.2%. Diesel cars accounted for 32.6% of all new cars sold so far this year, compared with 43.8% in the first six months of 2017.

Conversely, demand for petrol cars was up by 11.4% in January-June, while sales of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles were up 24% – although such cars still only account for 5.5% of the market.
