The revised Volkswagen Passat GTE offers more range, more power and a more impressive suite of technology. But how does it compare with its plug-in hybrid rivals?...
The new Passat GTE builds on the capabilities of the already impressive original, thanks to its greater electric range and improved tech. However, while it’s a fine car, it’s worth noting that the competition has also moved on; the BMW 330e is able to travel even farther (37 miles) before its petrol engine needs to cut in.
Competitive pricing, fuel economy and company car tax rates will therefore be crucial, not only in determining whether the GTE returns to the top of the plug-in hybrid class, but also in whether it makes more or less sense than the 2.0-litre diesel version of the Passat. At the moment these key numbers are still to be confirmed.
