Tesla Model 3

Coming soon: new electric cars

While Tesla already offers the Model S and Model X electric cars, the Model 3 will be its most affordable product ever, with a likely entry-level price of around £35,000. That would place it directly in the firing line of conventional executive saloons such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Orders are being taken now, but first UK deliveries aren’t expected until early next year.

Tesla Roadster

Coming soon: new electric cars

The first ever Tesla wasn't the Model S, but the two-seater Tesla Roadster (above). Sold between 2008 and 2012, it was based on the Lotus Elise and will finally be replaced in 2019. Few details of this new Roadster have been revealed so far, but it's likely to use a shortened version of the Model S's platform and will be even faster than the Ludicrous Mode version of that car, which can blast from 0-62mph in 2.8sec.

Volkswagen ID

Coming soon: new electric cars

This Golf-sized hatchback goes on sale in 2020 and will be the first in a series of new Volkswagen electric cars. It will have a range of between 249 and 373 miles from a single charge, eclipsing the recently updated version of the Volkswagen e-Golf. And by putting the electric motor at the back of the ID, Volkswagen says it has freed up space inside and given the car a tight turning circle that's perfect for driving around town.
