Range Rover Evoque: the rivals

High-quality cabin
Good to drive

Unadventurous styling
Some rivals are more practical

What is it? The smallest member of BMWs 'X' family. It's close in size if not price - to the Evoque and is offered with a range of three 2.0-litre diesel engines. It's available with front- or four-wheel drive.

Sharp handling
Low CO2 emissions
Well equipped

Some cheap-looking cabin trim
Refinement could be better
Firm ride

Price range: 24,420-31,425

BMW X1 review

What is it? The middle sibling in BMWs 'X' family. It's bigger than an Evoque and more of a family car than the X1. Available with two trims and two engines, all with four-wheel drive.

Enjoyable to drive
Very low CO2 emissions
Practical cabin

Clunky manual gearbox
Rather gruff diesel engine
Centre tunnel limits flexibility

Price range: 31,140-39,625

Mini Countryman
What is it? The Countryman is Minis largest model yet. It comes with a choice of four- or five-seat layouts and a range of personalisation options. Lots of engines and trims to choose from, and the choice of front- or four-wheel drive.

Affordable to buy and own
Should hold its value well
Good standard equipment

Not as much fun as a Mini hatchback
Limited interior space
Too much road noise

Price range: 16,345-23,190

Volkswagen Tiguan
What is it? The Tiguan is Volkswagens recently face-lifted compact SUV, with updated styling and more efficient engines. As before, its a sound ownership prospect and all versions are good to drive. Escape trim adds a more rugged front bumper and extra off-road kit.

Low running costs
Excellent ride and handling
Classy image

Unadventurous styling
Mediocre performance
Rear visibility could be better

Price range: 21,085-28,020

Worth waiting for?

Porsche Cajun
A baby brother for the Cayenne. Porsche has confirmed that the Cajun will be built, but nothing beyond that. Its likely to be based on the Audi Q5, with prices starting at around 40,000 and a launch date in early 2013.
