Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.

Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.

Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. Likewise, its SUVs are among the sharpest handling, as well as offering high levels of practicality and quality. Meanwhile, the Panamera is a true rival to the very best large executive saloons.

Porsche also sees itself as an electric car pioneer and has already enjoyed sales success with its plug-in hybrid range. Its first all-electric sports car is imminent, signalling the firm’s intent to stay relevant for many years to come.

PORSCHE

MACAN

Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.

The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, which costs more than £100,000.

BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has six in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5 and X6.

All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Coming soon: new cars worth waiting for

Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV have all won their classes at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards in recent years, while the TT coupé is the most decorated car in the history of the ceremony.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

AUDI

The upcoming Q6 e-tron will use an updated version of the mechanicals that underpin the brilliant&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/e-tron-gt/saloon/review/n22728">Audi E-tron GT</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/taycan/saloon/review/n20184">Porsche Taycan</a>&nbsp;performance cars.&nbsp;As a result, you can expect it to have a 90-100kWh battery, giving it a range of around 300 miles between charges – in line with what you get from other large electric SUVs. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/ix3/4x4/review/n22236">BMW iX3</a>, for example, has an official range of 285 miles and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/jaguar/i-pace/estate/review/n122">Jaguar I-Pace</a>’s is 292 miles.

Electric cars: Audi Q6 e-tron - on sale late 2022

Like the E-tron GT and Taycan, the Q6 e-tron should feature 800-volt charging functionality, allowing it to take on electricity at speeds of up to 270kW. That’s fast enough to get the battery from 10-80% in around 20 minutes (if you can find a suitably powerful charging point, of course).

Estate

Tesla is the company that changed the car industry, putting electric cars at the forefront of public conscious – helped by the personality and profile of boss Elon Musk.

Today, Tesla has a wider line-up than ever, with the BMW 3 Series-rivalling Model 3 set to make its products more accessible. Alongside the Model 3, the larger Model S saloon and the Model X SUV continue to turn heads, while a new roadster, complete with supercar-beating acceleration, is in the works.

However, while the cars are all impressive, and for all that Tesla has acted as a catalyst for the more traditional car firms to develop electric vehicles, it’s a firm that continues to attract criticism, most notably for the reliability of its vehicles – a fact verified in the latest What Car? Reliability Survey.

TESLA

Model Y

Essentially a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a>&nbsp;on stilts, the Model Y is Tesla’s take on the popular family SUV market. With a range of up to 315 miles between charges and access to Tesla’s super-fast and reliable charging network included in the price, it’s a compelling proposition for anyone looking to go green. It’s noisy for an electric car, though, and some rivals offer a smoother ride.

Tesla Model Y – on sale spring

City-Car

Citroën is probably most famous for its quirky design, and the latest cars from the brand live up to this tradition, featuring paintwork-protecting ‘Airbumps’ and eschewing the sporty looks favoured by most rivals.

Indeed, Citroën tends to keep away from sportiness altogether and instead tries to put comfort first.

Value (but not cheapness) is also key to the appeal of most Citroëns. And the company’s range includes everything from small hatchbacks (such as the C1 and C3) to big, family-friendly seven-seaters (the Spacetourer and Grand C4 Spacetourer).

The C3 Aircross SUV is another of its popular models, while a larger C5 Aircross is planned.

CITROEN

Technically, the Ami isn’t a car at all; it’s an electric quadricycle, just like the rival&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/renault/twizy/city-car/review/n163">Renault Twizy</a>. Its top speed is restricted to 28mph and the official range is only 46 miles, but prices are expected to start at just £6000, making it an ultra-cheap proposition. It’s surprisingly spacious for two inside and so compact that it can fit into the tightest parking spaces.

Citroën Ami - on sale spring

Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. When our testers compared the car with its rivals, they concluded that it was the best launch of the previous 12 months, earning it our coveted overall Car of the Year Award.

The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.

VOLVO

Essentially a coupé-styled version of the existing XC40 Recharge family SUV, the C40 is Volvo’s rival for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q4/hatchback/review/n23205">Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback</a>. Power comes from two electric motors, each drawing power from a 78kWh battery. The result is a combined 402bhp and an official range of up to 273 miles between charges. We like its rapid performance and plethora of kit.

Volvo C40 Recharge - on sale spring

Hyundai has transformed itself from a maker of oddball hatchbacks that sold in small numbers in the UK, to a major rival to the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

The Korean firm’s Ioniq Hybrid is particularly impressive, having beaten the trend-setting Toyota Prius when we tested the cars back to back.

Meanwhile, at the extremes of the Hyundai range you find the tiny i10 city car – a four-time What Car? award winner – and the stylish yet family-friendly Santa Fe SUV.

As a bonus, all of these cars come with the reassurance of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, whereas most of Hyundai’s rivals offer only three years and 60,000 miles of cover.

HYUNDAI

This&nbsp;all-new four-door coupé’s 77.4kWh battery – already in use in the closely related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>&nbsp;– should result in a range of up to 330 miles. That’s less than the entry-level version of the rival&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/i4/hatchback/review/n23575">BMW i4</a>&nbsp;but more than the equivalent Tesla Model 3, so it should be plenty for most buyers.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 - on sale late 2022

Expect entry-level versions to be powered by a single 226bhp motor driving the rear wheels, with a four-wheel-drive, dual-motor, 321bhp model sitting above it in the line-up. The range-topping Ioniq 6 N, meanwhile, is likely to have 577bhp. All versions will&nbsp;be able to replenish its battery from 10-80% of capacity in as little as 18 minutes, if you can find a powerful enough public charger.

Hatchback

Based on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/4-series/hatchback/review/n17260">BMW&nbsp;4 Series Gran Coupé</a>, the i4 is an electric executive car with a large hatchback boot that’s designed to rival the Tesla Model 3. Our recent drive showed that it definitely has the potential to match the best from Elon Musk’s stable. A 335bhp eDrive40 version and a 536bhp M50 will be available at launch, with prices for the former starting&nbsp;from £51,905.

BMW i4 - on sale spring

Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.

That process seems to be working for buyers, with the hugely popular and striking-looking C-HR SUV in particular attracting a great deal of interest. The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.

However, it’s worth noting that this period of transition is also a work in progress, and that many of the firm’s cars are still rated as being no more than average among class rivals by our testers.

TOYOTA

BZ4X

Toyota is planning to launch a range of electric cars, but the bZ4X SUV will be the first to arrive. It’s apparently designed to offer comparable comfort and space to the existing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/lexus/ls/saloon/review/n191">Lexus LS</a>&nbsp;luxury car, plus we’d expect the very latest driver assistance technology to be available. Power is drawn from a 71.4kWh battery, giving a range of around 280 miles.

Toyota bZ4X – on sale late 2022

Modern Fiats fall into two categories: the retro models and those with more functional designs.

Cars in the first camp appeal to the heart and include the 124 Spider sports car and the 500 series: a hatchback, a convertible, an SUV and two MPVs.

By contrast, the remaining models rely on their practicality and attractive pricing, with the Panda city car, Tipo hatchback and Fullback pick-up truck all prime examples.

Fiat can trace its roots back to the 19th century but is now part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, along with Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep and Maserati.

FIAT

The Centoventi started life as a concept car in 2019, but it’s set to become a production reality in 2022 and could eventually replace today’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/fiat/panda/hatchback/review/n128">Fiat Panda</a>. The concept was built to be upgradable, giving owners the chance to increase its range or power over time, but some versions will already be able to cover up to 310 miles between charges.

Fiat Centoventi – on sale late 2022

The&nbsp;new Macan will go fully electric and attempt to blend the staggering performance of Porsche’s Taycan saloon with a relatively compact SUV body. To this end, it’s likely to be powered by the same electric motors as the Taycan. In that car, they churn out between 322bhp and 617bhp.&nbsp;Expect a maximum official range of around 300 miles and the ability to rapid charge the battery from 10-80% in around 20 minutes if you specify the optional 800-volt charging functionality.

Porsche Macan – on sale late 2022

Owned by Mercedes-Benz and with a reputation for making small, clever cars, Smart offers a striking, upmarket alternative to more conventional rivals.

It currently has a two-car line-up, the smaller of the two being the distinctive Fortwo, which, as its name suggests, is an ultra-short two-seater that uses an unusual rear-engined configuration to deliver the sort of turning circle that even London taxis can only dream of. It's a doddle to park in small spaces, too.

Smart's 'family car' is the Forfour, which is little more than a stretched version of the Fortwo, with a second row of seats and a larger boot. It's more of a natural rival for cars like the Hyundai i10 or Kia Picanto.

On paper, both cars come at a considerable price premium when compared with rivals, something it says is justified by its badge appeal and the technology in the cars.&nbsp;However, sales have been slow and there are often keen Target Price deals to be found.

SMART

Smart’s first SUV will use a large, 86kWh battery that’s capable of providing more than 300 miles of range. Facial recognition technology is expected to be included as standard, with this identifying registered drivers as they approach the car and automatically adjusting settings to their preferences – for example, the seating position and radio station.

Smart SUV – on sale late 2022

With prices expected to start from just £25,000, this Chinese-made electric car will be one of the cheapest of its kind, and all versions should&nbsp;qualify for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/government-cuts-electric-car-grant-to-pound1500/n23903">Government’s £1500 grant for zero-emissions models</a>. Power comes from a 169bhp electric motor driving the front wheels, and the Cat’s official range is up to 261 miles, depending on which battery you go for.

Ora Cat – on sale spring

Nissan turned up early to the SUV party, with its Qashqai paving the way for the countless models we see today. The Qashqai continues to sell in big numbers in the UK, too, and was also our overall Car of the Year in 2014.

Don’t think Nissan is just about SUVs, though. As well as the Qashqai, the smaller Juke and the larger X-Trail, the Japanese brand has the Micra hatchback, GT-R sports car and Navara pick-up truck.

Nissan was also one of the first big car makers to launch a fully electric car, with its latest Leaf being one of the best on the market.

Despite being based in Japan, Nissan has long committed to building cars in the UK, making several of its best-selling models at a huge factory in Sunderland.

NISSAN

ARIYA

From the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/qashqai/hatchback/review/n7">Qashqai</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/juke/hatchback/review/n45">Juke</a>&nbsp;SUVs to the electric&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/leaf/hatchback/review/n17338">Leaf</a>&nbsp;hatchback, Nissan has a habit of changing the game when it enters a new segment. And that’s why its first electric family SUV, the Ariya, is such a big deal. It'll be offered with&nbsp;three motor options, producing 215bhp, 239bhp or 389bhp and offering between 223 and 310 miles of range. Rapid charging at up to 130kW will be possible.

Coupe

The VW Group famously spends more money on research and development than any rival – and as a result, perhaps it should be no surprise that our testers rate its cars so consistently highly.

The fact that many of those cars use the same underpinnings also helps, because it means that if they get it right once, they have the foundations to keep on getting it right.

However, the Volkswagen brand faces plenty of tough competition, often from within, because the rapidly rising Seat and Skoda brands that are also part of the group have access to the same technology.

VOLKSWAGEN

ID.5

The next model to join&nbsp;Volkswagen’s all-electric ID stable is a coupé SUV that’s closely related to the existing ID.4. Like its conventional SUV sibling, there’s just one (77kWh) battery option on offer, giving an official range of up to 323 miles. Entry-level versions are powered by a single 172bhp electric motor, while the sporty GTX gets 295bhp from dual motors.

MODEL S

Mid-life updates to Tesla’s luxury car will focus on the interior, with the portrait-orientated touchscreen infotainment system of today’s car ditched in favour of a 17.0in landscape unit that looks to be better integrated into the dashboard. Beyond the new interior, the big news is the introduction of a 1006bhp Plaid variant that can sprint from 0-62mph in 1.9sec.

Tesla Model S – on sale spring

The ID.Buzz will be available as both a commercial van and an eight-seat people carrier, with the former expected to take loads of up to 800kg, compared with the 595kg of the conventionally powered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/tourneo-custom/mpv/review/n17556">Ford Tourneo Courier</a>.&nbsp;Both single and dual-motor variants of the ID.Buzz will be available, with the latter bringing four-wheel drive, while versions with the biggest battery available should be able to cover more than 350 miles between charges.&nbsp;

The interior itself will be thoroughly modern, featuring the same digital instrument panel and touchscreen infotainment system as other Volkswagen ID models. The dashboard is likely to incorporate so-called ID Light strips, which can illuminate in different patterns to subtly alert you to everything from an incoming phone call to the direction in which the sat-nav system wants you to turn.

The sportiest Seats have long used the&nbsp;Cupra name, but it's now been turned into a standalone sub-brand, in much the same way as Fiat's sportiest models are badged as Abarths.

There's just one car in the line-up at the moment: the Cupra Ateca SUV. However, Cupra versions of the Ibiza and Leon hatchbacks are also planned, as is a bespoke model which –&nbsp;initially, at least –&nbsp;won't be offered in regular Seat from.

Don't think that the first Cupra is just an Ateca with a bit more power and a sporty bodykit, either. Its&nbsp;engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system are actually very similar to what you'll find in Volkswagen's flagship Golf R hot hatch, and the car can hit 62mph in just 5.4sec.

CUPRA

We’ve already got the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/cupra/born/hatchback/review/n23703">Cupra Born</a>, but Seat’s performance brand is planning a second electric car: the Tavascan coupé SUV. An expected starting price of around £60,000 would see it undercut premium-badged rivals such as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/e-tron/hatchback/review/n21908">Audi E-tron Sportback</a>&nbsp;and Jaguar I-Pace, while an official range of 279 miles between charges is competitive.

Cupra Tavascan – on sale late 2022

POLESTAR

Most details about Polestar’s third model are still under wraps, but we do know that it will be an SUV and that the front end will be influenced by the futuristic Precept concept car. Although it’s about the same size as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-x/hatchback/review/n161">Tesla Model X</a>, the 3 will have seating for five rather than seven. It will also be used as the basis for the next&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc90/4x4/review/n99">Volvo&nbsp;XC90</a>.

Polestar 3 – on sale autumn

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

MERCEDES-BENZ

Two versions of the EQE will be available from launch: the 288bhp EQE 350 and a higher-powered version with an output that’s yet to be announced. Both feature a&nbsp;single, rear-mounted electric motor. They will be followed by dual-motor, four-wheel-drive and high-performance AMG models.&nbsp;Range will vary from 339 to 410 miles, depending on which model you go for, but this is currently an estimate rather than the result of official tests.

Mercedes EQE – on sale summer

It’s inside where you’ll see the strongest resemblance to the larger EQS – particularly on cars fitted with the optional 56in-wide ‘Hyperscreen’ that stretches across the entire dashboard.&nbsp;Only two smaller screens will be standard, but they’re still a good size: 12.3in for the instrument panel and 13.0in for the infotainment.

GENESIS

T-ROC

The mid-life facelift of the Volkswagen T-Roc brings&nbsp;with it styling changes including chunkier bumpers and a new light bar. The engine line-up hasn't changed,&nbsp;so the 109bhp 1.0-litre petrol unit will remain our pick, striking the best balance between performance and affordability.

Small and family SUVs: Volkswagen T-Roc – on sale spring

Inside, you'll find an 8.0in or 10.3in digital instrument display in place of the previous version's dials, and a new 8.0in or 9.2in infotainment display atop the dashboard.&nbsp;Sadly, the outgoing car’s physical climate control knobs have been replaced with touch-sensitive buttons and sliders, which are more difficult to use.

Volkswagen T-Roc – on sale spring

Jeep only makes SUVs, but it has plenty of them for you to choose from. So, whether you want something rugged enough to ford streams and climb mountains, or a more luxurious and family-friendly car, it has something to suit you.

Despite its all-American image, Jeep is actually owned by Fiat, meaning Jeeps often share parts with cars from the Italian giant; the entry-level Renegade, for example, has plenty in common with Fiat’s 500X.

However, perhaps the most widely recognised Jeep is the Wrangler, a model that has a dedicated fan base and which closely resembles the original Jeep which saw service in World War 2.

The brand’s future plans include new small and large SUVs, plus the introduction of fully electric models.

JEEP

COMPASS

Jeep is refreshing its Compass&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-family-suvs-2022/n17116">family SUV</a>, including introducing the option of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>&nbsp;power for the first time. The car’s technical details have yet to be revealed, but we’d expect an electric-only range of at least 25 miles between charges. Other features include a new 10.25in digital instrument cluster and a more efficient 1.3-litre petrol engine.

Jeep Compass 4xe – on sale spring

QASHQAI

We’ve been impressed with Nissan’s new Qashqai so far, and the best could be yet to come. E-Power versions will feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor, with the former acting as a generator for the latter. The result is an electric car you don’t have to plug in.

Nissan Qashqai e-Power – on sale spring

TAIGO

The Taigo is Volkswagen’s smallest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-coupe-suvs-2022/n23014">coupé SUV</a>&nbsp;and will arrive with the option of three petrol engines – including the 94bhp 1.0-litre unit we recommend in the closely related T-Cross. Volkswagen Taigo – on sale spring

Alfa Romeo now has one of its strongest-ever model line-ups, after years of living off past glories.

The BMW 3 Series-rivalling Giulia executive saloon is one of the best cars in its class to drive and has performed very well in the annual What Car? Reliability Survey, while the closely related Stelvio competes in the booming SUV class.

Smaller and larger SUVs are planned, as is a two-door coupé version of the Giulia that will take on the Audi A5, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé.

It’s all a long way from the days when Alfa Romeo just had a couple of dated hatchbacks (the Mito and Giulietta) and the niche 4C sports car in its range.

ALFA ROMEO

This plug-in hybrid family SUV is expected to combine a 1.3-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, and should be able to travel at least 30 miles on electricity alone. Expect an exterior design similar to the concept car pictured above, and a high-end interior designed to rival the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x1/estate/review/n100">BMW X1</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/range-rover-evoque/4x4/review/n109">Range Rover Evoque</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n119">Volvo XC40</a>.

Alfa Romeo Tonale – on sale summer

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

NIRO

The Niro will continue to be three cars in one – available as a regular hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a fully&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-electric-cars-2022/n17000">electric car</a>, the latter having an official range of 282 miles. The Niro’s looks have changed, though, with a more aggressive front grille, slim LED lights and a contrasting colour panel on its haunches. Inside, you’ll find new digital dials and a larger infotainment screen.

One of the greatest success stories in the car world of recent decades is Skoda’s rise to become a hugely credible mainstream maker of good-value, good-sense cars.

Central to that success has been its place within the VW Group, alongside the Volkswagen brand itself, plus the likes of Seat and Audi. That has given it access to exactly the same underpinnings for its cars as the other brands, and it has complemented this by adding its own developments, from the way the cars drive and ride through to the features they have and the pricing.

The result is a range that extends from a city car to a large executive saloon, with family and large seven-seat SUVs too. There’s a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are competitive for the class.

As a result, Skoda has a range of cars that is almost entirely class-leading or among the class leaders, and it has enjoyed long-time success at the What Car? Awards as a result.

SKODA

KAROQ

A refresh for our favourite sub-£30,000 family SUV is expected to bring a new-look nose echoing those of the larger&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/kodiaq/estate/review/n17362">Kodiaq</a>&nbsp;and the latest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/octavia/hatchback/review/n39">Octavia</a>. The interior will get some technology upgrades, including Skoda’s latest infotainment system. Existing petrol and diesel engines will be tweaked for greater efficiency, and some form of electrification is possible.

Skoda Karoq – on sale spring

C5 X

Instead of creating a traditional&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-executive-cars-2022/n2004">executive saloon</a>, Citroën has come up with a model that also takes inspiration from hatchbacks, estate cars and SUVs. The C5X&nbsp;will eventually be offered with a choice of petrol engines, but at launch the focus is on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>&nbsp;(PHEV) variant, which combines a 1.6-litre petrol unit with an electric motor for a total output of 222bhp. An electric range of up to 31 miles is possible, according to official tests.

Executive and luxury cars: Citroën C5X – on sale spring

The C5X has adaptive suspension that can be stiffened or softened, and so-called Advanced Comfort seats, which we like in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/citroen/c5-aircross/hatchback/review/n18246">Citroën&nbsp;C5 Aircross</a>&nbsp;SUV because they remain very supportive during long drives.&nbsp;The C5X's 545-litre boot is a generous size, beating not only what saloon rivals offer but also estate equivalents, such as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/3-series/estate/review/n108">BMW 3 Series Touring</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/c-class/estate/review/n17346">Mercedes C-Class Estate</a>.

Citroën C5X – on sale spring

4 SERIES

If you like the svelte looks of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/4-series/coupe/review/n62">BMW 4 Series&nbsp;Coupé</a>&nbsp;but need some extra family-friendly practicality, this Gran Coupé version is for you. As well as two extra doors, the Gran Coupé includes a usefully wide-opening tailgate. Prices start from £41,650.

Saloon

Vauxhall has an incredibly diverse range of cars on sale, a few of which stand out above the class average. Add in the fact that it still offers some of the largest Target Price discounts in the market (something it is trying, without huge success, to cut back on), and there are very good reasons to consider buying one of its better models.

However, you need to choose carefully, because it is also a brand in transition. It has a newish parent company – the same one that owns Citroën, DS and Peugeot. And while Vauxhall’s newer models tend to be competitive, some of the others feel dated; a quick check of our star ratings will reveal which is which.

Still, given the recent success of sister brands Citroën and especially Peugeot, each new launch should make its range more appealing to buyers.

VAUXHALL

INSIGNIA

Vauxhall’s executive car is in line for some big changes, gaining chunkier styling and a beefier look as it transitions to become a halfway house between an executive&nbsp;car&nbsp;and an SUV. Engines will be shared with the Citroën C5 Aircross and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/peugeot/308/hatchback/review/n17380">Peugeot 308</a>, with at least one plug-in hybrid version available from launch. Expect an overhauled interior, too.

Vauxhall Insignia – on sale late 2022

BMW ALPINA

Alpina has a rich history of turning BMW models into performance cars, and the next car in line for this treatment is the 4 Series Gran Coupé. On its journey to becoming the Alpina B4, it will receive sportier styling and a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine offering 462bhp. That means a 0-62mph sprint time of less than four seconds is likely.

South Korean brand Genesis’s new model offensive continues with the G90, a rival for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a8/saloon/review/n17302">Audi A8</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/7-series/saloon/review/n127">BMW 7 Series</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/s-class/saloon/review/n17355">Mercedes&nbsp;S-Class</a>. Engines are likely to be shared with the smaller&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/genesis/g80/saloon/review/n23156">Genesis G80</a>, meaning a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.5-litre petrol will be the sole choices. Expect a premium interior and lots of kit at a relatively low price.

Genesis G90 – on sale summer

If big is beautiful, the new BMW XM has the potential to be a supermodel. Not only is it absolutely massive, at just over 5.1m long, but it will also be the most expensive and most powerful BMW SUV you can buy. The production XM will be a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>&nbsp;that is understood to combine a thumping V8 petrol engine with two electric motors. Together, the system produces a whopping 740bhp, as well as 737lb ft of torque.

Large and luxury SUVs: BMW XM – on sale late 2022

In electric-only mode, the XM promises up to 50 miles of driving on a full charge. That compares with the official range of up to 54 miles already offered by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x5/4x4/review/n38">BMW X5</a>&nbsp;xDrive45e, our favourite plug-in hybrid SUV. Inside, you’ll find dual digital screens to take care of instruments and infotainment, with the latter able to be controlled by touch, voice or a physical dial between the front seats.

BMW XM – on sale late 2022

Audi’s largest and most expensive SUV will rival the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/x7/4x4/review/n19102">BMW X7</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/gls/4x4/review/n139">Mercedes&nbsp;GLS</a>&nbsp;and is expected to cost around £120,000. To justify that price tag, the Q9 will offer palatial comfort for up to seven people, as well as a boot large enough to hold the proverbial kitchen sink. Engine options will include a 239bhp 2.0-litre petrol and at least one plug-in hybrid variant.

Audi Q9 – on sale autumn

If you want a new car but would rather not spend much, Dacia is a great place to start your search.

This budget brand builds Britain’s cheapest new car, the Sandero hatchback. And don’t think cheap automatically means nasty, because the Sandero has been commended at the annual What Car? Car of the Year awards on numerous occasions.

Other Dacia models include the Logan estate and Duster SUV. And while these cost slightly more than the Sandero, they’re still priced aggressively enough that they’re really only competing directly with used cars.

Dacia manages this by borrowing platforms and technology from its owner, Renault, to minimise development costs.

DACIA

With an expected price of around £20,000, the Bigster should comfortably be the cheapest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-large-suvs-2022/n17006">large SUV</a>&nbsp;you can buy when it goes on sale in late 2022. The seven-seater will be offered both as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/best-hybrid-cars-you-dont-have-to-plug-in/n17700">hybrid</a>&nbsp;and as a bi-fuel model that can run on either petrol or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The hybrid will feature a 1.6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors.

Dacia Bigster – on sale late 2022

Land Rover is synonymous with SUVs, and especially with the Defender – the rugged runabout that has seen service in war zones across the world, but also as part of the Queen’s personal garage.

If off-road prowess is one of Land Rover’s core values, though, the other is luxury. Indeed, the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar are among the best luxury SUVs you can buy.

The Discovery, meanwhile, is a practical rival for the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while the stylish Evoque (which is available as a three-door convertible as well as a traditional SUV) goes head to head with Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1.

In the coming years, we’ll see a new road-biased ‘Road Rover’ as well as an all-new Defender.

LAND ROVER

DEFENDER

The largest Defender to date will offer seating for up to eight people, but while it will be just as capable off road as its smaller siblings, it will also have a focus on luxury. Expect high-end materials to feature inside, with prices starting at around £70,000.

Land Rover Defender 130 – on sale autumn

XC90

The third generation of Volvo’s largest SUV will be offered with the choice of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/what-is-a-mild-hybrid-and-should-you-buy-one/n22776">mild hybrid</a>&nbsp;petrol engines, plug-in hybrid power and also as a fully electric car. The latter will comfortably take you farther than the 262 miles today’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n119">Volvo XC40</a>&nbsp;Recharge can manage and, as with any XC90, will offer seating for seven inside. It will also feature the latest assistance and safety kit.

Volvo XC90 – on sale late 2022

Yes, Aston Martin is the preferred manufacturer of a certain (not so) secret agent, but its latest cars offer a lot more than the chance to indulge your Bond fantasies.

The DB11 grand tourer, for example, won its price point at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, thanks to its beautifully crafted interior and the fact that it’s both fun in the corners and a convincing long-distance cruiser. Meanwhile, the latest Vantage is Aston Martin’s best sports car to date.

The modern Aston Martin isn’t afraid to move with the times, either, with a luxury SUV part of its future model plans.

ASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin’s first SUV has already impressed us with its playful handling and family-friendly interior, and in the summer it will gain a svelte coupé sibling. Expect the same thunderous 4.0-litre V8 engine to provide power, and a price tag approaching £180,000.

Aston Martin DBX Coupé – on sale summer

RANGE ROVER

Despite its&nbsp;radical rear end restyle, the new Range Rover&nbsp;retains the handy split tailgate that has always been part of the Range Rover recipe, with the lower section folding down to give you a platform to perch on.&nbsp;Both the normal and long versions&nbsp;can be specified with a three-person rear bench or two individually adjustable rear seats. You can also order the longer Range Rover as a seven-seater – the first time this has been possible.

Range Rover – on sale spring

Initially, buyers will be able to choose from 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and a 4.4-litre petrol V8. However, a plug-in hybrid that offers up to 64 miles of zero-emissions running will join the line-up shortly after launch, while a fully electric version will follow in 2024.

X-TRAIL

Featuring the same imposing design as the latest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/qashqai/hatchback/review/n7">Nissan Qashqai</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/nissan/juke/hatchback/review/n45">Nissan Juke</a>, the X-Trail will offer space for seven people on board, plus the option of electric power. In this form, it will use the same range extender set-up as the upcoming Qashqai e-Power, with a 1.5-litre petrol engine acting as a generator for at least one electric motor.

Nissan X-Trail – on sale summer

Mazda can be summed up in a single word: bold. Not only do its cars generally look like nothing else on the market, but it’s also invested heavily in innovative engine technology.

So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.

Highlights of Mazda’s line-up include the MX-5 sports car, which has won our Convertible of the Year Award multiple times, and the CX-5 large SUV, which was named as our inaugural best car for dog owners.

MAZDA

CX-5

The facelifted CX-5 large SUV will have a new focus on comfort, thanks to revised suspension that’s said to offer better ride comfort and less noise. Safety kit has also been enhanced, now including adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance. A new driving mode selector allows buyers to tailor the CX-5’s systems for different surfaces.

Mazda CX-5 – on sale spring

If you want your SUV to be able to tackle any terrain, the Grenadier might appeal to you. Based on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/land-rover/defender/4x4/used-review/n761">old Land Rover Defender</a>, it’s a hardcore off-roader that’s powered by six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines sourced from BMW. Priced from around £40,000, the Grenadier promises to be able to tow up to 3500kg and carry 1000kg.

Ineos Grenadier

Do you look at the models of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz and find them all a bit too… common? Well then, Maserati might be up your street.

This Italian car maker has one SUV in its line-up – the Porsche Cayenne-rivalling Levante – but also the Ghibli and Quattroporte saloons, GranTurismo coupé and GranCabrio drop-top.

Despite its long history, Maserati has been through several periods of inactivity but is now in better health thanks to being part of the large Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group.

In the future, we’re expecting to see Maserati grow its SUV range with new models to sit above and below the Levante, as well as a new range-topping sports car.

MASERATI

Maserati’s second SUV model (after the larger&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/maserati/levante/estate/review/n19462">Maserati Levante</a>) shares much of its underpinnings with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/alfa-romeo/stelvio/estate/review/n113">Alfa Romeo Stelvio</a>&nbsp;but is expected to use the brand’s own 2.0-litre turbo and 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines. A fully electric version will follow. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/macan/4x4/review/n52">Porsche Macan</a>&nbsp;rival promises class-leading handling and practicality, with prices likely to start at around £50,000.

Maserati Grecale – on sale spring

SL CLASS

If you daydream&nbsp;about what life will be like once that lottery win comes in, you might imagine the Mercedes&nbsp;SL as your daily driver. Sleek, powerful and able to drop its roof at the touch of a button to catch the rare UK sunshine, it’s every inch a car for winners. The two models available at launch – the SL55 and SL63 – will both be powered by a thunderous 4.0-litre petrol V8 with as much as 577bhp.

Sports cars and hot hatches: Mercedes SL – on sale spring

A range of V6 engines will be added soon after the car goes on sale, though, and among those will be a hybrid version with as much as 450bhp.&nbsp;Unlike the previous SL with its folding hard-top, the new model adopts an electrically operated fabric roof, to save weight and aid efficiency. It also adds two rear seats, although these are likely to be suitable only for short trips, or as storage space for bags and coats.

Mercedes SL – on sale spring

GT86

The successor to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/toyota/gt86/coupe/review/n17238">Toyota GT86</a>, the GR86 is a rear-wheel-drive four-seat coupé that’s designed to provide sports car thrills without a sky-high price tag. It’s powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine developing 232bhp, and can sprint to 62mph in 6.3sec. Although it’s the same size as the GT86, the GR86 is said to be a lot stiffer, which should give it sharper handling.

Toyota GR86 – on sale spring

One of the world’s most famous brands and an integral part of the Formula 1 grid since the first championship in 1950, Ferrari fully lives up to its exalted reputation, producing some of the best sports cars money can buy.

Its entry-level model (although that term hardly seems appropriate) is the Portofino convertible, which is powered by a twin-turbo V8 and capable of blasting from 0-62mph in 3.5sec.

Then further up the range you find the mid-engined 488s, in coupé and Spider forms, and two GT cars: the GTC4 Lusso and the appropriately named 812 Superfast, a V12 monster that can hit 211mph.

FERRARI

This Ferrari is a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/best-plug-in-hybrid-cars-2022/n22743">plug-in hybrid</a>, mixing a V6 petrol engine with two electric motors to produce a combined 819bhp. It can be driven using electric power alone for up to 16 miles and has a 0-62mph sprint time of just 2.9sec. Inside, you’ll find digital instruments and a head-up display that puts the most crucial information right in front of you.

Ferrari 296 GTB – on sale summer

2 SERIES

At launch, the second-generation 2 Series Coupé line-up will be crowned by the M240i xDrive, a four-wheel-drive performance car with 369bhp coming from a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine. Lesser 181bhp petrol and 188bhp diesel versions will take the bulk of sales, though. BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system features inside.

BMW 2 Series Coupé – on sale spring

Fancy something small, lightweight and fast? Then Lotus possibly has the right car for you. In fact ‘simplify then add lightness’ was the mantra of company founder Colin Chapman as far back as 1952.

These days, Lotus sells four models, with the core of the range being the Elise. Then there’s the more hardcore 3-Eleven, the sporty Exige and the Evora – which is pitched as a rival to the Porsche Cayman.

Big changes are afoot, though, because Lotus plans to build its own SUV in the near future, with the hope of broadening the brand’s appeal to families. The planned car will use Volvo underpinnings and will tackle rivals such as the Porsche Macan and Maserati Levante.

LOTUS

EMIRA

Lotus is taking on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayman/coupe/review/n17361">Porsche 718 Cayman</a>&nbsp;with its latest sports car, the Emira. Power will initially come from a 3.5-litre petrol V6 offering up to 395bhp (depending on which performance upgrades you choose), but a lower-powered 2.0-litre petrol engine will be offered later. Prices will start from £75,995 for one of the limited-run ‘First Edition’ models.
